As VMCII Held 12 Female Speakers For United Nations International Women's Day Celebrations in Nigeria

...Abubakar Ibrahim Idris Reporting From Abuja Live

Dame Judith Amaechi, the former First Lady of Rivers State, is calling for change on this International Women's Day.

She's highlighting the insufficient representation of women in legislative assemblies and governance as a major challenge in Nigeria.

To address this, Dame Amaechi is advocating for the effective domestication of the Beijing Declaration, a global policy framework adopted by 189 countries in 1995.

This declaration aims to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls everywhere.

Dame Amaechi emphasizes that women should have equal rights, privileges, and opportunities as men.

She's pushing for the implementation of the 35% women affirmative action proposal in governance, elective offices, and key appointments across Nigeria.

Despite the Beijing Declaration's vision, Dame Amaechi notes that violence against women and maternal and child mortality rates remain high.

She's urging governments to provide protection for women and girls through legislation and increase funding and institutional support to empower them.

Key Takeaways from Dame Amaechi's Call to Action:

- Equal Participation in Politics: Women should have equal participation in politics, with more than the proposed 35% affirmative action.

- Legislative Protection: Governments should provide protection for women and girls through legislation.

- Increased Funding and Support: There's an urgent need for increased funding and institutional support to empower women and girls.

- Special Windows for Women: Religious bodies, organizations, and governments should create special windows for women to promote their advancement.

Let's join Dame Amaechi in advocating for gender equality and empowering women and girls in Nigeria.
